I know they're in the area, but tonight as I sat at my desk at the wildlife
education center, a great-tailed grackle flew across the marsh right in
front of my window...it 'dwarfed' the red-winged blackbirds that were
flying around out there as well.
Although we've been seeing this species in the area of the Perry gate -
east side of the refuge - the last two springs, this is the first sighting
we've had right here at the new buildling...that I know of.
And as an aside, the common grackles are constantly dumpster-diving behind
the Wingers Restaurant, adjacent to Walmart in Perry as well. I often see
several of them, so they must be breeding locally.
