On Friday (July 7) my wife and I arrived at Mirror Lake at 11:30 AM and left
at about 3:30 PM (considered a little late in the day for the best birding).
The following birds were seen:
THREE-TOED WOODPECKER: South end of Mirror Lake Campground, go to the
Highline Trailhead just beyond and the next right turn past the host site
where horses can be unloaded/loaded. Walk the Highline Trail going north
for about 100 yards. I heard it pecking tree bark and followed the sound to
where it was. Great looks were had and the barred sides were very obvious.
GRAY JAY: On the same trail continue going north roughly 200 yards. We had
close looks at two Gray Jays.
CLARK'S NUTCRACKER: Seen at two locations--Moosehead Campground and Bald
Mountain Picnic area. You can hear them before seeing them.
PINE GROSBEAK: Seen on the Highline trail described above.
Other birds included: Chipping Sparrow, Mountain Chickadee, Mountain
Bluebird, Dark-eyed Junco, Brown Creeper, Cassin's Finch, Yellow-rumped
Warbler, American Robin.
