Greetings -

Here's an update on the falcons as of Wednesday night around 9:00:

The young male, Peewee (so named because Cindy Sommerfeld was in the...well, you know...when he took his first flight) is doing well. He has taken several short flights in the general area of the temple and is being fed by the parents.

The young female, Wendy, is also doing well. She spent a good share of the day on the lower west side of the Church Office Building. She wailed for a long time this morning trying to get someone to bring her something to eat. When mama flew over with something in her talons, Wendy started running and hopping along the ledge of the building and was flapping and crying like crazy. We thought she was going to attempt her second ever flight. Mama was perched on the JSMB and held her ground for a while. Finally, she gave in and delivered lunch to her baby. She landed on the ledge and Wendy ran over and snatched the prey from her mama. It was funny. Then mama proceeded to give Wendy a talkin' to. Something about bad manners or no more free meals... Later on Wendy left the COB and flew toward the Administration Building, turned around to come back and landed in a locust tree. After being in the tree for over an hour, a big gust of wind blew her down and she made a soft landing nearby. She appeared to be fine. Bob decided that rather than try to put her back up in the dark, he would take her to Jo's to spend the night. He will pick her up in the morning and she will be put back out at 8:30 a.m.

Bob watched one of the parents drop a piece of prey this morning which turned out to be a Sora. He told me that he has compiled a list of at least 35 birds that have been taken by the falcons over the years including grebes, doves, robins, cuckoos, meadowlarks. etc.

That's all for now.

Pomera

P.S. Cindy's temple square list is up to 21 species.
