Greetings -
I have not yet reported to falcon watch duty this year, but would like to pass along information obtained from those who have.
The young male bird (Peewee) left the box a few days ago. He crashed on his maiden flight, was taken to the rehabilitator for a check up and put back out. He flew again, crashed a second time and was again taken in for observation. Jo kept him overnight and then he was put back out again. As of about an hour ago, he was still on the JSMB beehive where they put him Tuesday morning.
The female took her first flight very early Wednesday morning. No one saw her go, but the watch crew found her on the Church Office Building when they arrived downtown.
This is a critical time for the young falcons. Learning to fly in the big city is problematic and it takes lots of eyes to keep track of them. So... if you have any time, please consider helping. Just come downtown in the general area of temple square and look for the folks with binoculars. Please feel free to contact me for more information.
I understand that Channel 5 is going to do a story on the birds on tonight's newscast, but I don't know what time.
Pomera
P.S. Just as I was about to send this message, I received an update from Susan McFarland on the young birds (3:10 p.m.). Here it is:
My son just called me with super news! The male flew from the JSMB to the east side of the temple on a spire. Apparently it was a good flight with minimal drop in altitude and a clean landing. He has also just received a food drop from a parent. The girl is still in the same spot and has had at least two food drops but is safe and looking good.
YIPPEE!!!
