I spent a few hours early this afternoon checking the causeway. I only
drove as far as the harbor at the west end of the causeway. It was warm
but the swarms of brine flies I anticipated were not present. Very few
small peeps were seen. Larger groups of american avocet, willets, and
Franklin's, ring-billed, and California gulls were observed. A flock of
about 30 marbled godwits flew over and then settled around MM 3. Driving
past it I noticed that it also contained a few long-billed dowitchers
that seemed already to be quite gray. Several large flights of American
white pelicans soared over. I counted 103 birds in a single flight and
later saw a much larger aggregation of several flocks that must have
totaled 3-400 birds.
