Hi all,
Tim Avery and I went birding yesterday. We stopped by Saltair where the
highlights were 8 Common Goldeneye and ~40,000 Northern Shovelers foraging
out on the Great Salt Lake.
We then stopped by Lee Kay Ponds. The gate was closed so we opted to view
the gulls on the west pond. Here we found 1 relatively dark first winter
Thayer's Gull mixed in with the California, Ring-billed and Herring Gulls.
Unfortunately, a Rough-legged Hawk flew over and flushed the whole flock so
we left before looking through all the gulls.
We again went out to Lee Kay today to look through the gulls some more. It
was not before long that I found an odd looking gull. I got Tim on the bird
and we studied the bird for almost two hours. We were smart enough to not
bring any field guide along today so that made things a little more
interesting. I don't have time to go into more detail so that will be done
later. Also, while we were watching the Western type Gull, Tim found a pale
first winter Thayer's Gull. Unfortunately, we didn't look through the
thousands of gulls that were on the pond to the east so another trip is in
order.
