All Interested Birders,
The Utah Ornithological Society (UOS) will be sponsoring a field trip on Saturday, May 19, to the Ouray NWR. We are posting this notice early so that local bird clubs and Audubon chapters may want to check their schedules and fit this event in as their field trip for the month, etc. According to Diane Penttila of Ouray, this is the best mosquito-free time to hopefully see some American Bitterns. The bitterns arrive a week earlier but are harder to locate. And, after the last week of May or the first part of June, the skeeters become ferocious, even worse than in most of the tropics. We will plan to meet at the Refuge Hqs. at 10:00 a.m., and spend as much time as desired; then, we'll probably stop at Pelican Lake for a few minutes, or longer, depending on what is there, then people will be free to leave whenever they wish.
For those who can get away earlier, on Friday we will be going up into Daggett County to bird some areas in that remote corner of the state that most of us don't visit very often. We'll check around some of the Forest Service campgrounds, Antelope Flats along the reservoir, and some other sites; then spend the night around Vernal. Then, on Saturday, we'll check out the Stewart Lake WMA near Jensen before meeting the main group at Ouray at 10:00 a.m.
More details will be forthcoming, motel rates in Vernal, etc.
