Folks,
I forgot to mention that as I was leaving the causeway, about 75-100 yards
before the toll booth and on the north side of the road, I saw a Short-eared
Owl coursing the area. It is great habitat for them, but I had not seen one
there before. The time was between 5-5:30 p.m.

Tore myself away from some football games and went to the causeway to see if
the Long-tailed Duck was still present. I talked with Paul Higgins and he
told me the female duck was present on Wednesday. That is the day I should
have gone. I could not locate it today. At the bridge closest to the
island there were Common Goldeneye present on both sides. On the south
side, with a small flock, was a female Surf Scoter. I looked in the marina
on the north end, swimming with some Goldeneye I thought I saw another
scoter, but it was playing hide-n-seek and I couldn’t make a sure
determination. It seemed that most of the water on the south side, closest
to the causeway, was frozen. There was only an open patch of water adjacent
to the south side of the bridge. The lake north of the bridge was open and
contained what seemed to be many Goldeneye. I could not locate any scoters
or other duck with this scattered flock. The weather was somewhat mild and
not too uncomfortable.
