This afternoon Merrill and I ventured forth to Clover Springs in an attempt
to see some of the birds seen by Eric early this afternoon—principally the
Chestnut-sided Warbler. We went to Clover Springs Campground and started
downstream until past the parking lot aways. We could NOT relocate the
Chestnut-sided Warbler.. However, we located the Northern Waterthrush on
the right side of the stream (going downstream). It was on the bank of the
stream between the parking lot at the end of the dirt road (the turn-around)
and about 20-25 yard downstream. Merrill located it first at about the
turn-around, then it disappeared. We relocated it further downstream, where
it was “flipping leaves” and looking for insects. It didn’t seem to be
bothered as we studied it, as it was walking along, pumping its tail and
“flipping leaves.”

I would suggest you start at the stream and work your way downstream. There
is sort of a path that can be followed. In the campground we saw both adult
and young Wild Turkey and Yellow-rumped, Nashville, Wilson’s, and Yellow (f)
Warblers, but NO Townsend’s Warbler. Also present were Warbling Vireo and
several flycatchers: Western Wood-Peewee, Coordilleran and Hammond’s
Flycatchers. We also saw Brewers, Chipping and Lark Sparrows and a Western
Scrub Jay. Near the entrance to the campground Merrill was able to spot a
House Wren, which I could not relocate. It was a beautiful afternoon, and
not too hot.

See the directions below to reach the campground.

We went on further to Willow Springs, but our searching only produced a
House Finch in the distance, and a Nashville Warbler near the busy road.
Merrill also heard a Bewick’s Wren.

On the way back we spotted several Swainson’s Hawks and a Northern Harrier
(m) that grabbed a mouse in front of us.

It was a very nice afternoon for birding. Hope you have success in finding
the Chestnut-sided Warbler and Northern Waterthrush, if look for them, plus
any others you might be searching for. Good luck!

Glenn

Springs

Eric Huish just called me ( Monday, Aug 28, 1:00 PM) to report that earlier
this morning around 10:00 AM he stopped at Clover Srpings Campground in
Tooele County on the way to Dugway. He saw a first winter Chestnut-sided
warbler and a Northern waterthrush in the campground, right by the springs
and later down farther by the parking lot. Other warblers present were
yellow, yellowrump, Nashville, Townsends, orange-crowned, Wilsons etc. In
other words, the usual migrating bunch.

To get to Clover Springs, take highway 199 from Rush Valley (west of Tooele
Army Depot) west toward Johnson Pass about 5 miles.

Most likely see you all in the morning for a good chase ~ Tuula
