I decided to try shorebirding with a new twist today and headed east instead of west. I visited both Echo and Rockport Reservoirs in Summit County to look for freshwater shorebirds at the inlet ends. Both reservoirs were relatively quiet, but these shorebird species were present:

Killdeer (many, E & R)
American Avocet (2, E)
Yellowlegs spp (1, R)
SOLITARY SANDPIPER (2, R)
Spotted Sandpiper (A few, E and about 30, R)
Western Sandpiper (1, E, and a couple, R)
Baird's Sandpiper (A dozen or so at each)
Long-billed Dowitcher (2, R)
Wilson's Snipe (A couple dozen, R)

Most enjoyable was the high number of Osprey at both reservoirs and in between. I think I saw 12-15 total. Summer species continue on the water including Western, Clark's, and Eared Grebes, and California Gulls. Only a few waterfowl species were present including Canada Geese, Mallards, Cinnamon Teal, Common Mergansers, and a pot-bellied Graylag Goose.

Echo Reservoir is located in the town of Coalville between I-80 exits 162 and 169. Rockport State Park is located on SR-32 south of Wanship and I-80 exits 156 and 157.
