I've received two responses on my initial Sleeping Quail post, so far.
You all have seen them as they were posted to BirdTalk.
There very well could have been that a raptor was in the area, and it
could have something to do with fermenting fruit or other feed. I've
seen the Robins get tipsy on the chokecherry and serviceberry over the
years. The Quail in our neighborhood tend to wander over a wide range,
and thus have a wide variety of potential feeding opportunities
available to them, so who knows. I've also noted that birds-of-prey
have been in the area and the Quail have not frozen. Both scenarios
make sense. It is just that I've never seen the Quail behave that way
before, and I've been watching them for decades. Of course I don't see
everything, nobody does, and it seems I learn at least something new
every day...
Thanks to all who replied. Any one else have any other insights or
similar sightings? Please share them with BirdTalk, to me that's half
the fun of this list-serve.
Happy Birding!
Matthew Wallace.
