A male SUMMER TANAGER was singing at the entrance gate to Fort Buenaventura
Park in Ogden, Weber County, this morning. The bird is a first spring male
and boy-oh-boy, does he look FUNNY with a red hood and all other plumage
yellowish-green. The bird was singing from the tops of tall cottonwoods
while hidden in the leafy canopies in several places around the gate;
however, once he took a perch on a dead cottonwood located 10 feet off the
northwest end of the bridge over the Weber River (still at the park
entrance). He sang "fee-WOPE, fee-YOU, fee-WHEAT!" over and over with the
first several notes clear whistles and the last two rather burry. He sang in
the area of the entrance for 10-15 minutes before he departed and I didn't
hear him again. I revisited the spot twice, but today the Boy Scouts are
doing many service projects in the park and a weedwacker limited bird song
and the opportunity to sift through the robins and grosbeaks to hear the
tanager again.
