I spent three afternoon hours in Payson Canyon today. The higher parts are deffinately slow with most breeding residents not yet there in any appreciable numbers. Lower down near the canyon mouth was much faster. Best bird was a pair of EVENING GROSBEAK at the Payson City Picnic Area a couple miles up the canyon. I've seen them in this area on other years and I think they actually nest in the canyon. This is the "reliable" western screech owl spot in the canyon. The area is also known as Beer Can Flats by the locals.
The trees here have been defoliated by inch worms and are so thick the sidewalks are slick to walk on. May be a good place to check for Yellow-billed Cuckoo a little later.
