While birding Deseret Ranch yesterday (May 23) with Helen Wheelock of
New York, we saw a male MAGNOLIA WARBLER. It was in the brush along a
stream just south of the ranch office (Home Ranch, Rich Co.). I have
some photos of the bird that I'm sending to be posted on the Utah
Birds website. Since all the Magnolia Warblers I've seen in recent
years have been fall migrants or wintering birds in Mexico, I'd
forgotten how stunning the male, breeding-plumage bird is. It was
fabulous.

Overall, we had a great day on the ranch, with 130 species total for
the day, in spite of a number of "big misses," including a half-dozen
or more species that I'd seen there just two days before. other good
birds included GREATER SCAUP, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and NORTHERN SAW-
WHET OWL (late? - but I've had them Memorial Day weekend in the past).
We saw the usual abundance of mammals as well.

A complete list of what we saw follows.

Good birding!
