Hello,
This evening (5/22), I located a large dark first-cycle gull at Sand Hollow
State Park (Washington Co., UT). The gull was along the south shore (across
from the OHV parking lot area) hanging around the sandy beach with a ragtag
flock of California and Ring-billed Gulls. I first noticed the gull around
6:30 pm from the upper loop road as I was taking the back way home from
Hurricane; I managed a few photos but had to head on home. Later Rob Dobbs,
Kristen, Quinn, and I returned and were able to study the gull in detail. It
was still present as it got dark. We think it is likely a first-cycle
Lesser Black-backed Gull, however it appeared very large-billed, and
overall, large and stocky relative to adjacent California Gulls..... I
managed some pretty good photos, so if anyone would like to form their own
opinion, let me know and I can send some along.
Regards,
Rick Fridell
