Thanks to all who posted the yellow-billed loon today. It was still
there at 6:45 p.m., quite far out in the reservoir. I was hoping it
would come into photography range, but it never did. There was a boat
moving around, and that could be one reason why. As others did
previously, I saw a nice group of birds as I hung out on the dam:
osprey fishing, pelican, great blue heron, rock wren, flicker, w.
meadowlark, barn swallow, golden eagle, CA gull, mallard, Canada goose,
Clark's grebe, common loon, and the star of the show - yellow-billed
loon. The YB loon could be seen clearly from the parking area, and in
the late afternoon light, the bill showed up from a large distance. I
have about a 10% success rate with bird chases, so this was a really
nice result. The kids got taught, and I still got the bird! Can't beat
that.
