Message: I'm the one who reported the Painted Bunting at my front yard feeder (actually Bill Fenimore reported it for me since I'm new to all this, thanks Bill). I just wanted to let people know that the colorful little guy is still using my feeders. Though no one saw him yesterday (Friday, May 1), I have seen him several times today (Saturday, May 2). My neighbor also reported seeing him, and a few birders stopped by who I'm pretty sure got to watch him at my hanging feeder. While I have been reading the discussion on whether or not he was a caged bird who escaped or a true adventurer who flew all the way here on his own, I think everyone agrees that it is a thrill to see such a gorgeous, free-flying bird in Utah. Please feel free to come by and look for him. I'm at 509 North 1400 West in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake. Be aware that he is a bit nervous and it doesn't take much to scare him off.
By the way I also have several other regular visitors in my front yard including: American Goldfinches, Cassin's Finches, House Finches, White-crowned Sparrows, LOTS of Pine Siskins, Mourning Doves, Eurasian Collared Doves, an occasional Black-headed Grosbeak, and of course, House Sparrows, Robins, and Starlings. Oh, and I've also had what I think was a Sharp-shinned Hawk swoop down for a quick meal a few times (yikes!).
