FINALLY!!! My sapsucker's are late. The only actual
documentation I have is a photo dated March 25.
I believe they showed up much earlier in the drought years.
The first male red-naped appeared on the pine
outside my kitchen window today.
They will feed on the sap from this pine
for about one month until their
nesting activities pick up.
They nest in the aspen forest around my home.
This particular male is unusually yellow orange. A brilliant
and beautiful male. Usually the yellow is cooler
and lighter.
If anyone is interested, I believe the individuals can
be differentiated by the pattern on the primary feathers.
I have many photos with some birds showing very
unique patterning. I will gather the photos of the individuals
when I have time.
