Hi All,

We ran over to Ouray/Pelican for a couple of hours late this morning. There
is open water around the shore at Pelican Lake and the waterfowl are
starting to come in. The Shepard auto loop at Ouray was kind of
disappointing since water is somewhat lacking. The Refuge has done more on
the handicap/walking trail, and installed a bench. We saw several deer and
porcupines. We saw one American white pelican, one yellow-headed blackbird,
one Northern flicker, and one spotted towhee. We saw a few each of Wild
turkey, Common merganser, Northern pintail, Ring-necked duck, killdeer,
American robin, Great blue heron, Canada goose, Sandhill crane, Western
meadowlark, and Eurasian collared dove. We saw lots of red-winged
blackbirds, Common Goldeneye, American widgeon, Redheads, Cinnamon teal,
Green-winged teal, Gadwall, Northern shoveler, Mallards, and of course,
myriads of coots. The raptor mix was two Golden eagles, about 8 or 10 Bald
eagles (they ought to be heading north soon), 5 or 6 Red-tailed hawks, one
Prairie falcon, and one Kestrel.

Birds we expected but did NOT see in the short time we were there: eared
grebe, pie-billed grebe, northern harrier, marsh wren. Shorebirds still
largely lacking.
