Reinhard Jockel phoned with the first sandhill crane report of the
season this morning. He and Jason were out birding and saw three
sandhill cranes in the fields south of the Bear River on 3600 West
(the road from Valley View Highway to Benson) The cranes were with a
small flock of Canada geese.
They also went looking for the white-winged crossbills at Logan
Cemetery. There were a few high up in the tree tops at the cemetery,
he said, but the best sighting was on 10th North by the USU stadium.
There in a tree, very close, were more than a dozen. "We also saw
another flock fly -- there must have been 3 dozen or more."
Also, they saw a huge flock of geese and ring-billed gulls at the pig
farm, and large flocks of horned larks. "That's worth going to see,
because sometimes there are snow geese and cackling geese, though none
were there today," he said.
