[Birdnet] Calls

Bryan just mentioned calling (an owl?) and getting birds to come  
investigate. How does one go about doing this? Are these recordings?  
On a boombox? On what medium/machine? I would love to try recorded  
calls. I know they do that in the cloudforests of Ecuador for all  
kinds of species, but I think they use cassette recordings on old  
playback machines.
