Hello again,
On Friday (1/30), participants of the St. George Winter Bird
Festival enjoyed a sunny winter day (in the mid 70's) at Lytle Ranch
(Washington Co.). Since I'm late posting the results, I honestly can't
remember which group saw what birds, so I'll combine the results of both the
morning and afternoon field trips. Overall, bird activity was a bit lower
than usual, although there were some significant highlights including a
stunning (and very cooperative) male Anna's Hummingbird, a singing Crissal
Thrasher (for the morning group), and a flock of nervous ducks flying off
the pond (including ~20 Ring-necked Ducks and a female Common Goldeneye).
Other unusual birds included a Mountain Chickadee (rare at Lytle) and a
Green-tailed Towhee (heard in the morning - very rare in UT in winter).
For those who missed the St. George Winter Bird Festival this year, you
should definitely plan on attending in the future. This is an
outstanding event, and getting better every year, with a nice variety of
field trips and many great presentations and activities (not to mention the
excellent weather, scenery, camaraderie....and, oh yeah, birds!). Kudos to
the many organizers for their hard work in pulling this off; you continue to
do an outstanding job.
Regards,
Rick Fridell
