I would imagine everyone is tired of hearing about crossbill sightings but I had my first of the year this morning in the City Cemetery. I found only the Red Crossbill but they were terrific fun to watch. There were also siskins galore feeding with them. Of course I've seen both species before but in the case of the crossbills not in such numbers - a bucketload (1 bucketload = +-40). What made the sighting extra enjoyable was that both the crossbills and siskins were feeding in junipers and on the ground beneath them. I was literally surrounded by them and was as close as 15 feet to them. No strain of having to look high up in pine trees - there they were very up close and personal and they were beautiful. Also, in the Avenues on my walk to the cemetery I watched two Eurasion Collared-Doves mating. Uh-oh. It was also the first time I'd heard their call and will now be able to recognize it in the future.
