Four horned grebe were seen at Mona Reservoir (Juab county) early this
afternoon between the boat ramp and the dam on the west side of the lake.
While all four were in the same general area, each was doing its own thing.
Three were in breeding plumage and the fourth was in mid-molt between winter
and breeding plumage. Three were feeding just a few feet from shore while
the fourth was about 100 feet out. Two common loons were also present, as
were numerous waterfowl, American coots, American white pelicans, and
double-crested cormorants. Looking across the lake to the east shore,
numerous great blue herons and double-crested cormorants were occupying
nests in the rookery trees. Several Swainson's hawks were also seen around
the lake, as was a pair of golden eagles.
