This morning (4/01/09) Brian and Jeannette Nosker, Sharen Perry and I went to the Huntsville City Park to see if the White-winged Crossbills were still hanging out there. They are. We saw about 20 altogether. We saw our first Turkey Vulture for this year. Three of them were circling around the park. South of the park about 24 Wild Turkey decided it was time to be up and about and dropped out of a Spruce tree and ambled of to the west. Two Canada Geese had taking over the Osprey hacking tower, near Anderson Cove Campground. They did the same last year.
We saw the following species:
Canada Geese Black-capped Chickadee
Mallard Dark-eyed Junco
American Wigeon Gray-headed race of Dark-Eyed Junco
American Robin Pine Siskin (about 30)
Northern Flicker Turkey Vulture
White-winged Crossbill House
Wild Turkey
Red-tailed Hawk
Swainson's Hawk
Great Horned Owl (on a nest in a big Cottonwood at the home of Jim McKay)
Eight of us met for breakfast before the trip. It was snowing while we were eating so the other four decided to go with us. Don't let the weather stop you from birding. You never know what you'll miss out on by doing so.
