My husband and I visited Farmington Bay WMA in Davis County this afternoon.
The duck hunters have thoughtfully caused the ducks to amass in the north
and west sides of the waterfowl rest unit where we can see them conveniently
from the dike along the west side of the unit. Seriously, I'm thankful for
the hunting activity at this time of year because it concentrates the ducks
at the bay and makes them easier to see. A scope is still helpful.
Best birds in regards to level of rarity included several GREATER SCAUP. I
swept through literally hundreds of Lesser Scaup before finding any
Greaters, they were neither easy to find nor numerous today. I saw five or
six. A male CINNAMON TEAL brightened everything up in his fresh spicy
plumage, one WESTERN GREBE looked lonely without compatriots, and four
HORNED GREBES swam along the edges of the raft near the south end of the
ducks (not far from the southwest end of the dike).
Other species in the water or seen from the west dike included:
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Northern Shoveler
Northern Pintail
Green-winged Teal
Canvasback
Redhead
Ring-necked Duck (only one)
Bufflehead
Ruddy Duck
Ring-necked Pheasant
Eared Grebe
Bald Eagle (only two)
Northern Harrier
American Kestrel
American Coot
Herring Gull
a handful of other gulls at a distance, to which I paid little attention
Common Raven
Marsh Wren
American Pipit
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Red-winged Blackbird
I was amazed not to see any Canada Geese or Mallards. I believe the Canadas
I heard honking were fake Canadas.
