Hi All,
Still a fair amount of snow on the ground here, and ice on
lakes/ponds/streams, although it is starting to disappear. Nights at home
are still in the teens.then getting up to 30s or occasionally 40s at warmest
during the day. I'm still seeing an occasional Bald eagle, Redtail hawk,
Kestrel, Rough-legged hawk, or Canada goose; and today on the way to town I
watched five Sandhill cranes fly over, then came home to an immature
Sharp-shinned hawk in our cottonwoods. Our Spotted towhee showed up last
week for the first time since late fall; the Red winged blackbirds are shiny
and plentiful; we still have two Black-capped chickadees, two magpies, a
Eurasian collared dove, lotsa goldfinches (mostly American at this point, I
think), fewer juncos (mostly it is the Oregons that are fewer), fewer
White-crowned sparrows (light lores), House finches, House sparrows. We've
had one or two each Pinyon and Scrub jays hanging around, but I haven't seen
them or our one surviving Northern flicker yet today. We still haven't seen
any Cassin's finches or dark-lored White-crowned sparrows, which is a little
unusual. Maybe we'll run over to Ouray/Pelican tomorrow and look around.
