The best way to "get" the Whip-poor-will is to arrive at Green Canyon by
930, and to be patient and listen. The bird is very vocal, and the song is
unmistakable. You can hear it, as well as Poorwills and perhaps Flammulated
Owls. The night I was there (6/19) and from what I have read re: other's
posts, the bird sings and sings and sings, sometimes right next to the
road. There's no need to follow the bird up and down the hillside with a
spotlight. ABA rules, I believe, allow you to count a bird as long as you
can positively identify it, whether you hear it or see it.

Thanks, good luck, and good birding!

Craig.
