This should have been posted last night in my opinon, but wasn't becasue the original observer said they would post and has not yet. Thanks to those who got word to me in any event. Details below.
Last night Ron Ryel found a Whip-poor-will in Green Canyon in Cahce County. Craig Fosdick, Stephanie Cobbold and Ryan O'Donnell were alerted to the birds presence and also were able to heard the bird giving its distinct call. Recordings were obtained, and are indeed that of a Whip-poor-will.
The spot is easy to find but requires a high-clearance vehicle (we were fine in a light truck). It was singing from next to a turn-around loop near the end of the road
(UTM zone 12T, 440151E, 4627160N, WGS84). This canyon gets a lot of traffic from partying kids on the weekend, but the bird might stick around and sing over the drunken revelry tonight, who knows. I probably won't be able to go tonight but I thought you might want to.
To get to Green Canyon take I believe 1900 North East out of Logan into the mountains. The precise location is listed above.
Good birding
