Keeli,

You're welcome to document any bird you'd like on your list; you get to make
your own rules for the birds that appear there. My list includes Pink Floyd,
Big Bird and Larry Bird.

If you wish to follow American Birding Association rules, however, the
Mandarin Duck doesn't qualify. Your theory about the bird likely being an
escapee is right. Mandarins have not been proven to have an established
population in our state and they don't appear on the Utah Birds Checklist.
Other alien species that have become established due to man's introduction
efforts (gallinaceous birds like California Quail and Ring-necked Pheasants;
Eurasian Collared-doves; European Starlings) do qualify for listing under
ABA rules.

Congrats on seeing such a beautiful duck. The male in all his finery is
proof that God is an artist.

Kris

Subject: [Birdnet] Mandarin Duck at Mick Riley Golf Course

I know this is a little belated to report, but I saw a Mandarin Duck
sitting on the bank of a pond at Mick Riley Golf Course, near Murray Park
last wednesday while I was doing Canada goose surveys. At first glance I
thought was that it was a wood duck, because it was so colorful, but when I
pulled out the binos it was all wrong for a wood duck, and had the white
face and the other markings just like a Mandarin. I was wondering if this
was a bird I should report on my bird list, or if it is most likely an
escapee from an aviary or zoo or something.
