Today I checked several locations in Cache Valley, looking for shorebirds.
The Logan Mitigation Ponds, aka Sue's Ponds, were fairly busy, and provided
some good birding.
At the first pond south of the access road were:
Marbled Godwit-1
Long-billed Dowitcher-10
Western Sandpiper-7
Killdeer-5
Wilson's Phalarope-2
Black-necked Stilt-7
American Avocet-12
California Gull-25
Ring-billed Gull-2
Franklin's Gull-20
White-faced Ibis-9
Ruddy Duck-1
The SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS located by Buck Russell yesterday were still at the
third pond south of the access road .
Black-necked Stilt-3
Least Sandpiper-1
Spotted Sandpiper-1
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER-2
Killdeer-6
The "Shorebird Playa" (still in the Mitigation Ponds/Sue's Ponds) has water
in it....and 400+ gulls, mostly California / Franklin's Gulls.
I watched a SAGE THRASHER (yes, I know, not rare in Utah, but they sure seem
to be hard to find in Cache County) foraging in the weeds that have sprouted
in the bed of the dry north pond.
Benson Marina and the PacificCorp Bear River Oxbow Overlook on Sam Feller Rd
were both relatively quiet. At the bridge (4000 N) over the Bear River in
Benson were 300 BANK SWALLOWS either massing for the southbound migration,
or migrants that chose to stop and rest, plus a couple each BARN and CLIFF
SWALLOWS. The Bank Swallows were perched on telephone wires.
On a tip from John Barnes, I checked the pond in Steele Canyon, and found
the SOLITARY SANDPIPER that John found on 7/25. Steele Canyon is private
land with a public road; if you bird it, please stay on the road.
Flooded fields on 3200 W south of the Logan Polishing Ponds (which had no
shorebirds; the water level has come up several inches) had ~400 White-faced
Ibis, 8 Killdeer, and some Franklin's Gulls.
Good birding, Craig.
