Hi Doug-
I'm not so certain that this is a Harlan's. I don't have all my id guides
in front of me, but the first thing that strikes me is that this bird has
little white in the breast. Most (all?) of the dark morph Harlan's Hawks
that I've seen have varying degrees of white streaking in the breast, and no
brown or rufous tones. I used to (2002-2004) search for Harlan's Hawks
quite a bit in sw Idaho with a birding buddy of mine while we were graduate
students at BSU. Though I cannot remember how many we saw, we found that
there was a rather sizeable population wintering in the Boise-Nampa area.
Also, according to Sibley, Harlan's Hawks also have wingtips that do not
reach the tail when folded. I think your bird is a dark adult Red-tailed
Hawk, but not a Harlan's. But a beautiful bird nonetheless. ;)
Anybody else?
Craig.
Logan, Utah.

Hi Birder buddies,
Could you please go to
http://picasaweb.google.com/OlDugDawg/RedTailedHawkHarlanS
and tell me if this is truly a Red-tailed Hawk, Harlan's population? That's
theclosest match I could find for this bird in the Sibley guide. I saw the
bird in Bountiful on 29 Jan 2007, about 10am.
Thanks,
Doug Roberts
