[Birdnet] what's this critter???

Doug,
Looks like a House Sparrow, probably a juvenile. The fact that there
was a good sized flock of them is also consistent with that ID.
Chipping Sparrows are possible in winter (I saw one near Nampa, ID a few
years ago in December and I recall one photographed at Sun Valley, ID in
mid-winter) but a flock of them would be very unlikely.
