As reported by Paul Lombardi, one Ruff was between mm 4 and 5, north
side, on the Antelope Island Causeway. It later moved to the south side
and to the east a little ways. There were also numerous Killdeer as
well as several other shorebirds that looked like Western Sandpipers,
except that they had a lot of brown on the upper part of the chest -
more than the field guides/shorebird books show for winter plumage
westerns. I know that the brown wash on Westerns is variable, so maybe
these guys were on the ample end of the scale. I'll send a (not great)
photo of one to Milt to post for verification on utahbirds.
Also on the Causeway today were two Long-tailed Ducks and a female
Barrow's Goldeneye at the bridge closest to the island (north side),
numerous Harriers, 2 Bald Eagles, 1 Prairie Falcon, and 1 Kestrel.
There was a large flock of Horned Larks near the entrance gate at about
9:30 a.m., but I was on a Ruff mission, so I didn't search the flock
too carefully. They were moving around a lot, as well. I searched for
about 2 hours for Snow Buntings to no avail. Three had been seen
earlier in the day by some birders from Maryland.
Other ducks at the bridge - hundreds of Shovelers, also Common
Goldeneye and Bufflehead.
