[Birdnet] Another Mockingbird and an Unanswered Qustion

Sunday the 13th I was rounding the corner at 2nd Avenue and D Streets in SLC when a bird came up from a hidden corner of lawn and perched in a small tree +-20 feet from me. It took me two beats to see that it was a mockingbird. But this one (not the same one I saw several weeks back right near here at my apartment building) looked like a juvenile just beginning to get its adult coloring. I stood there, somewhat confused, as by this time of year Mockingbirds should be in full adult plumage - that's been my experience in the past in California, Arizona. Couldn't figure it out. But I knew it was a Mockingbird, although more brown than gray and with some blurred streaking in its breast and flanks - tried to turn it into something else (not many choices) but it remained a Mockingbird in mostly juvenile plumage. I know these birds pretty well but am still surprised by its non-adult appearance. Has anyone else seen this species at this time of year that hasn't been fully adult?
 Thanks.
