This evening form 6:30-7:30 pm I birded the International Center with Steve and
Cindy Sommerfeld. We concentrated on two areas, the first being 5600 West
north of 600 North. Which was rather un-birdy, but yielded a Mac's and a
Vesper Sparrow. Next we headed to the far west end and around to the north
side of the Compeq building, which is lined with conifer.
About 60 feet into the trees I spotted an adult WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
(white-striped edition) on the fence line on the north side of the trees. I
hollered for Steve and Cindy to get over, and the bird headed to the east. We
continued east, and on several occasions, I heard the bird give a high pitched
chip note. About 2/3 of the way through the mess we had a Zonotrychia lift out
of the ditch and fly directly over us, and back to the west through the line of
trees.
We finished birding to the end of the line (also seeing Western Wood-Pewee,
Hermit Thrush, Dusky Flycatcher, Orange-crowned Warbler and several Lincoln's
Sparrow), before working our way back to the west end.
Also of note were 6 COMMON NIGHTHAWK. Right after sunset 5 birds appeared over
the fields just to the north of the Compeq building. And as we were talking at
our cars, at the west end of the trees, another bird came flying up the road.
To get to this area, take the 5600 West exit on I-80 and head north to Amelia
Earhart Drive. Turn left and follow Earhart till it T's on the west end of the
center. Turn right and follow this to the dead end at the north side of the
center. The line of trees heads east from this on the north side of the Compeq
building.
Cheers
