A very brief visit to Garr Ranch yesterday late morning/early afternoon
was quite rewarding and resulted in one rather surprising species, a
Golden-crowned Kinglet feeding in the grass very near the north fence of
the picnic area. In one binocular view I had the GCKI, a Red-breasted
Nuthatch, and a Wilson's Warbler. That's an unlikely trio! Nearby were
several Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Dark-eyed Juncos,
and a veritable classroom of empids: Hammond's, Gray, Dusky, and
Cordilleran Flycatchers and Western Wood-Pewees. I also located two
Cassin's Vireos near the spring (also a Warbling and a Plumbeous), and
saw an unusually large number of Wilson's Warblers. Other birds of note
were several Spotted Towhees, a Green-tailed Towhee, and a Hermit
Thrush.
Good couple of hours.
