[Birdnet] POSSIBLE Philadelphia Vireo

Jack,

I was on my computer when I got the e-mail. The place is not too far from my house, so I headed out. I stayed at the Parkway for two hours, but didn't see the vireo, though there was a lot of "little" bird movement all around me. It could still be there. However, I did see the Green Heron (not a lifer, but a new Utah bird for me, thanks for letting us know); Nashville, Yellow-rumped (lots), Yellow, and MacGillivray's Warblers; Western Wood Pee-Wee; Hammond's (four feet in front of my face) and Cordilleran Flycatchers; lots of California Quail; Cedar Waxwings; and the sparrows (Chipping, White-crowned, Song, and a lone Vesper). Also, though individuals have been reported from this area before, a group of 12 Common Grackles around the bridge. They were mixed in with some Red-winged Blackbirds and making a lot or racket. I hope someone has better luck finding the Vireo.

Thanks,

Stephen

  Subject: [Birdnet] POSSIBLE Philadelphia Vireo

  Hi,

Bob Huntington and I went to the Jordan River Parkway at 5400 South and 1040 West to look for a Green Heron that Bob found earlier in the week. We walked past the pond and did not see the heron on the first pass. We went north almost to the end of the trail and got into a bunch of warblers. Some Nashville, Yellow and lots of Yellow-rumped<about:blank#> Warblers. We both got on what seemed to be a Warbling Vireo, but when it got out into the open a little it was much too yellow. We both got good looks at it for a few seconds at a time and the yellow on the upper breast went clear across. The lower breast went to a grayish and the under tail coverts were again bright yellow. The overall appearance<about:blank#!> was that of a Philadelphia according to Sibley<about:blank#>. I hope someone else will get to see the bird. Right now it is not on my list, but I would say it is very possible. We stayed for an hour or so hoping to get a picture, but no. We did see it a couple of more times and both still think Philadelphia.

On the way back by the pond, the Green Heron was on the west bank. We watched it for a few minutes and I tried to get some pictures. He is a bit spooky and all I got was a couple of long shots.

We went back to the end and tried for another hour to get some more looks at the vireo, but did not see it again.

The trail is on the west side of the Jordan River. There is a bridge from the Murray Parkway and the trail north is just off of the bridge. Just about a hundred feet before the end of the trail that is stopped by a corral, there is a little open area with several olive trees and willows. This is where we saw the bird. We were there from about 12:30 to 3:15.
