Thanks to Tim for posting the report of the flycatcher. Keith Evans and Jack
Rensel saw a bird they were very sure was a Great-crested Flycatcher on the
dirt frontage road about 100 yards north of the entrance to Camelot Woods in
Utah County yesterday afternoon. They saw a large flycatcher that they
described as obviously from the Myiarchus genus fly out from a Russian
Olive, chasing a bug. The bird had a bright yellow belly and a strong
demarcation between the yellow belly and the gray of the upper breast. The
bird retreated into the olive and they were unable to locate it again, even
with an attempt to call it out with a recorded playback.
Dennis Shirley visited the spot late yesterday afternoon and this morning; I
spent about an hour there this morning at first light and neither of us saw
the bird.
To visit this area, take I-15 to exit 261, Springville. Turn west at the end
of the exit ramp and then right (north) onto the dirt frontage road. As you
head north, you'll pass the gates at Camelot Woods, which appears to be
under construction, but nowhere will you see a sign for Camelot Woods. Drive
north for about a hundred yards until the dirt road widens into a circle
where people turn their cars around. A small (30 foot wide) pond is west of
the road with a water-filled channel running west of the pond. This is the
area where Keith and Jack saw the flycatcher. Access is poor; due to the
private property, water, and heavy vegetation, you're limited to walking up
and down the dirt road.
