Just like to let you all know about a couple odd birds we have had in our
backyard here in Croydon, Utah(Morgan County) in the last couple of days.
First on Monday(9/3) after noon there was a juvinile White-winged dove
feeding with four Eurasin Collared Doves below our feeders. And the second
was a Bewick's Wren foraging in our wood pile this morning(9/5). After
talking with my father(Arnold Smith)I believe these are both firsts for
Morgan County. Also we have been having a Coopers Hawk hanging out for lunch
the last two days
and the hummingbirds have tapered off signifagantly in the last week but we
are still seeing five to ten.
Another couple of interesting bird sighting are from the west desert. I saw
an Osprey sitting on one of the Railroad bridges out at Hogup, and for those
of you that are wondering where this is, it is a railroad siding about half
way between Ogden and Lucin on the former Southern Pacific Railroad that
cuts across that Great Salt Lake with no public access. The other sighting
was at the same location about two weeks ago which I have been very
reluctant to mention but after seeing the for mentioned birds I will let you
all decide what I saw. I was on a train coming east from Lucin to Ogden and
at Hogup I had a flock of eight to ten birds fly across the tracks infront
of me. The birds looked to be black or a very dark brown, with a pause in
their flight like blackbirds and looked to be about the size of cowbirds
which is what came to mind male cowbirds but as we spilt the group at about
25 miles an hour their underwing had that silver shimmer that Turkey Vulters
and Rosy-finches have and I took a look out the side window and could swear
that they indeed were Black Rosy-finches. Unfortunatly I could not just stop
and go chase them to get a positive id on them, and there isn't a snow
capped mountain within a couple hundred miles of this desert location. If
anyone has another idea of what they could have been I'd love to hear it.
