Waterbird/Raptor Count
8/31/07
Only about 14% of total birds observed were from the tour loop. The Tour
loop unit is all but dry. There is only 1 unit along the tour loop (east
side) holding water that does have several thousand shorebirds and
waterfowl.
Total number of waterfowl around 161,000 which is well above long-term
average of 110,000 for the last week of August. Waterfowl are absolutely
packed into the few wetland units that have water in them, mainly in the
closed portion of the Refuge. Total shorebirds of 30,000 is near the
long-term average. Notable birds include long-billed curlew and
black-bellied plover. Monthly record high counts of American Wigeon and
ring-billed gull.
