Hello Everyone,
It's looking like this is going to be a year similar to Fall 2004 when there
was a significant movement of Red-breasted Nuthatches into lowland areas.
On Thursday (8/30) I saw a Red-breasted Nuthatch at the picnic area at Fish
Springs NWR (Juab Co.) and another in Snake Valley (Sacred Pig Springs,
Millard Co.). There are also many reports (some from as early as late July)
of Red-breasted Nuthatches turning up in surprising locations in Nevada and
California. I believe there was a re-distribution of Red-breasted
Nuthatches following the 2004 movement, as they quickly became much more
common nesters in the limited Washington County high elevation habitats
(e.g. Lava Point, Oak Grove, Pine Valley Mountains).
I'd be curious to hear if others are seeing these guys turning up in any
unusual locations.
Regards,
