I made a quick trip to AIC this afternoon, and for those of you (maybe I was
the last one?) who have not yet been able to make the trip to see either the
Long-tailed Ducks or the White-winged Scoters, they are still there, same
place they've been seen previously, at the last bridge on the causeway. I
counted 14 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, including 4 males in full basic plumage; the
other 10 birds were apparently all some variation of females and young
birds. 13 of the LTDU were on the south side of the causeway, dispersed
among about 200? Common Goldneye. The LTDU spent much of their time very
close to shore. The 14th LTDU was a female hanging out near shore on the
north side of the causeway, all by her lonesome. It took me a while to
notice them, but the two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS (females) were hanging out
among the rocks at the base of the bridge. I last saw the two scoters swim
under the bridge to the north side of the causeway at around 330 pm, and I
did not see them again, though I doubt they went very far. About 100-150
meters west of the bridge, on the south side were 3 GREATER SCAUP. Other
than that, I was not fortunate to see any of the Snow Buntings (nice photos
Paul!) nor did I see the Black Scoter or the Mew Gull. However, this was
definitely a hit-n-run trip and I was short on time, so I did not have time
to glass the waters with scope or binoculars for distant birds. So....

Other birds whose numbers have started to build following the last cold
front:
Common Goldeneye-350+
Tundra Swan-80
