Waterbird/Raptor Count
3/14/07

Monthly record high counts were set for tundra swan, mallard, canvasback,
bufflehead and greater yellowlegs. Total waterfowl count of about 233,000
is more than triple the long-term average count for this week in March of
69,000 but about double the count from last year at this time. Total
number of shorebirds was around 800. The long-term average for this week
is only around 100. Apparently, migration appears to be about 7-10 days
ahead of "average". First spring sightings were noted for Clark's Grebe,
Greater Yellowlegs, Dowitchers, Franklin's gull, and Bonaparte's gull.

Good tundra swan viewing from the Auto-Tour-Loop as about 8,000 are in that
unit. Remember to plan your birding trip to the Refuge before June this
year as the public access road will be closed for paving June-August.
There will be opportunity for occasional guided tours. Check our web-site
for details at a later date.

The 5 marbled godwits with satellite transmitters on them are all still in
Mexico. I'm anxiously awaiting northward movement!
