This afternoon while golfing at Glendale Golf Course in Salt Lake City, one of
my buddies asked why the "little seagulls" were "fighting". I looked over to
see one Tern fervently pursuing another around the main pond between the 1st
fairway and the 9th fairway. However what struck me as odd, was the size of
the Tern being chased, as it appeared noticeably smaller. I only had my point
and shoot in my golf bag so I grabbed it and started shooting some video, which
is needless to say less that "quality", extra shaky and half the time the terns
aren't in the picture. In any event the "Smaller" tern was an Adult LEAST TERN
in breeding plumage. I watched the two birds for about a minute before the
Forster's gave up and dove for a fish while the Least continued floating
around. There were 3 Forster's Terns in the area and later, while playing near
the 6th I observed the Least on another pond! By the time we got back to the
9th tee I could only see 1 Forster's hanging out, but I could hear another one
near another pond by the Driving Range.
In any event, Glendale Golf Course is between Redwood Road and Raging Waters,
just to the north of 2100 South. There are I think 4 larger sized ponds which
usually have several Terns around. It may be worth checking tomorrow to see if
the bird is still hanging about.
