It's an interesting year for yard birds. resident common grackles and
brown-headed-cowbirds, barn and violet-green and a northern rough-winged
swallow, and now the lesser goldfinches are starting to outnumber the
Americans again. We had a young barn swallow run slow loops over the feeder
area for about two days, landing occasionally.the white bar across the tail
showed up really well. The mourning doves still outnumber the Eurasian
collared by about 30-3. Orioles, kingbirds, finches, towhees, magpies,
cowbirds, red-wing blackbirds, Says phoebe and sparrows all nesting or with
young. We have black-chinned, but still haven't spotted rufous or
broad-tailed hummers this year. The robins are camped out in the mulberry
tree, trying to beat us to the treats.
Semi-unusual: we had an ash-throated flycatcher on 5/24, a male blue
grosbeak on 6/5, and tonight (6/9) we had a white-winged dove show up and
sit for a picture! I'm really wondering now if we have resident
white-winged doves up here all of a sudden. I sent in a photo of the
white-winged dove from tonight, and one of a male grackle doing a
velociraptor impression.
We have a big old elderberry bush with a dead top that sits at the edge of
the bench overlooking the canyon. It's fascinating to watch the
combinations and rotations of different birds that use it as a lookout or to
proclaim their territory morning through evening.
