June 4th birded hundreds of miles of desert roads
North and West of the Great Salt Lake.
Species observed in the harsh desert include:
horned lark (all over everywhere)
meadowlark (common)
cowbirds (large flocks)
loggerhead shrike
mourning dove
burrowing owl
raven
golden eagle
sage thrasher
scrub jay
(as many as 3 species of unidentified sparrow-like things)
The cowbirds were the biggest surprise. I have never before
seen cowbirds in the harsh desert. It turns out that they were
feeding on an infestation of mormon crickets about a mile north
of rabbit/owl springs.
I was hoping to bird the GSL shoreline, but water levels
are way low this year.
Species observed in agricultural areas or on the margins of the
desert included:
hungarian partridge
sage grouse
willet
burrowing owl
short eared owl
raven
meadowlark
horned lark
western kingbird
red tailed hawk
lb curlew
swainson's hawk
kestrel

And a bird to add to my life list, which I hesitate even to mention on
a Utah list because it was just over the border into Nevada:
