Birders,

Kevin Wheeler and I located a flock of 7 whimbrels at Panguitch lake on the
evening of May 31 while scouting out an area for a bird walk. The whimbrels
were congregated on a narrow spit of land that juts into the western side of
the lake-observable from West Shore Road. Four black-necked stilts, app. 10
American white pelicans, and several gulls including a California, also
perched on the spit.

On the bird walk the next morning, the whimbrels were unfortunately not
relocated. However, a gray catbird was observed and heard singing in the
willows along West Shore Road. Approximately 30 species were observed that
morning, treating members of the Color Country Natural Resources Camp to some
beautiful views.

Though the whimbrels may have already passed through, Panguitch Lake may be of
interest to traveling birders. To get to the birdy western side of the lake,
take highway 143 from Panguitch (if coming from the north) or from Cedar
Breaks (if coming from the south) and turn right (from north) or left (from
south) onto West Shore Road-which is near the Church. There are a few places
to pull out and park and walk down to the lake, or continue on through the
willow wetland and up a slight incline to a pullout where you can look over
the lake and see the spit.

Good birding!
