I am very reluctant to send this email but I am very confident that we just had a female juvenile or adult COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD at our front porch feeder! We have spent time in SoCal the past couple of summers and have been very close to these birds. As soon as Dan & I saw the bird at the feeder, we both said, "What is that? It's very different than our regular visitors. It looks like a Costa's. Could it be?" We watched her feed for another few seconds and then she was gone. The white eyebrow was the first thing that alerted us. There was a small wash of green or buff on her flanks but not rusty like the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS that have been hanging around for the past couple of weeks (we normally don't have the RUFOUS in our yard until August.) She was very white underneath including the undertail coverts. We could not see her tail as she flew off. I am going to keep an eye on that feeder and will try for a photo!
