Tuesday night at 9:45 pm, Stacie Schoppman and I heard an ELF OWL in the Beaver
Dam Wash, just south of Lytle Ranch Preserve. At around 9:30 I played an Elf
Owl call about 1/2 a dozen times over 5 minutes. No response was made and I
put tape away. In the meantime we began looking for scorpions with a
blacklight, when about 100 feet or so away and Elf Owl cackled its te te te te
te te call. I asked if she had heard it and she did. I pulled out the tape
again and played and the bird sounded a bit closer. I walked to within about
25 or 30 feet of the sound and the bird continued to cackle even after I
stopped playing the call. I only had my flashlight and no spotter, and was
unable to locate the bird visually.

The area where the bird was heard was just after you cross Beaver Dam Creek
below the ranch. The bird was in what would be the west or south clump of
trees. This is the grove where you can drive about 100 yards off the road into
the small camping area, as opposed to the east grove which is all posted as
Private Property.
